Fulham set to offer new deal to Bettinelli

Fulham boss Kit Symons has confirmed he wants to offer goalkeeper Marcus Bettinelli a new deal.

The 22-year-old has impressed during his maiden season in the Fulham first team and was recently linked with a potential move to Chelsea.

Symons said: “He’s a bright young goalkeeper and I’m not surprised he’s been linked with other people.

“He’s at the right place to continue his development. He’s made mistakes, as we all have this season, but he’s learned from them and he’s the type of character who wants to learn.

“He knows he’s got a lot to do still but I’m very optimistic that he will develop and continue to get better and better, so I’m really excited to oversee that development and see him get better and better for Fulham.

“He’s one of our bright young players who’s had a really good season that he didn’t expect, and probably not too many other people did either. But he’s done exceptionally well and I’ve been delighted with his progress.”

Fulham play their final home game of a turbulent season on Saturday when they host promotion-chasing Middlesbrough.

The Whites’ safety was only confirmed in midweek when Millwall failed to beat Blackburn, and Symons admitted he was relieved to see their Championship status confirmed.

He added: “It was just a huge weight off my shoulders.

“I’m not scared of anything – but the thought of this club getting relegated was a horrible prospect. When that was put to bed finally I did breathe a sigh of relief.”

Fulham will be without loanee James Husband, who is ineligible to face his parent club, when they take on Middlesbrough, while Kostas Stafylidis (back) and Scott Paker (ankle) are doubts.

Boro have doubts over Chelsea loanee Patrick Bamford and former Harrow Borough winger Albert Adomah, who both have ankle injuries.
