Boss Jol praises players for their resilience

Relieved Fulham boss Martin Jol praised his team for their resilience after they came through a marathon Capital One Cup tie at Burton Albion.

Fulham looked to be easing their way into the third round after Adel Taarabt’s goal – his first since joining the club.

But League Two side Albion hit back and then led in extra time before Hugo Rodallega levelled and the visitors scored with all five of their penalties to prevail in a shoot-out.

Fulham eventually reached round three.

Jol said: “It could have been a bad night for us. The crowd smelt blood but it turned out nice in the end.

“We put a strong side out because we wanted to win the tie. In England the lower league sides make it difficult for you, and they made it difficult for us.

“But I am pleased with the resilience of my squad. They showed that they wanted to get through.”

Jol named a strong line-up for the game but opted to leave out Dimitar Berbatov and Damien Duff ahead of this weekend’s trip to face Newcastle.

“I spoke to Berbatov and we thought that it was better to rest him,” the Dutchman explained.

“But we wanted to go to the next round and you saw that. It was a great game of football.”
