West Ham v Chelsea player ratings

Chelsea had Nemanja Matic and manager Jose Mourinho sent off as they were beaten by West Ham. Here’s how we rated the players in the 2-1 defeat at Upton Park.

Asmir Begovic: 5
Didn’t have the most convincing display, mainly because of some shoddy kicking and poor distribution. Beaten at his near post for the first goal and hesitant on Aaron Cresswell’s cross for the second. But other than that, did not have many saves to make.

Kurt Zouma: 5
The big French defender was very unfortunate not to score with a fine first-half header but is clearly not comfortable in his makeshift right-back role. Was once again lacking positionally and is ill at ease venturing forward.

John Terry: 6
Dependable and commanding stuff once again until his fluffed clearance led to West Ham’s winner. Chelsea will play much worse and lose, and Terry gave a decent captain’s display lifting a side with brittle confidence who were trailing and down to 10 men.

Gary Cahill: 7
Took his goal with typical composure and gave an assured performance but was unable to cope with Andy Carroll’s aerial threat for the crucial goal.

Cesar Azpilicueta: 7
Another steady effort from the dependable Spaniard. Defended resolutely, supported in attack and maintains a work ethic and attitude that is an example to all, even if things are not going according to plan for the team or him personally.

Nemanja Matic: 5
Was playing well and beginning to dominate the midfield when he was red-carded. A cynical and needless foul earned his first yellow card and, while he may have been unlucky to be booked a second time, he was daft to give the referee the option.

Ramires: 6
Work-rate, energy and commitment were in abundance as ever. But so were a horrific wayward finish from a second-half counter-attack and some typically sloppy moments when in good possession.

Willian: 8
Was the star man for Chelsea by some distance and the best player full stop. Demanded the ball throughout, even when Chelsea were down to 10 men and he was surrounded. Led by example, taking responsibility when the odds were stacked against the team, defended and attacked at pace and used the ball with great effect.

Cesc Fabregas: 5
Was desperately unlucky not to get on the scoresheet when his delightful first-half strike was ruled offside, but he was a peripheral figure for most of the time. Improved at the end of the first half but taken off at the break following Matic’s red card.

Eden Hazard: 5
Has taken plenty of unjustified criticism so far this season but deserves a bit of flak for a half-hearted display. Lacked convinction throughout and, even though he was often crowded out by three of four defenders, he was slow to use the ball, too quick to look for a foul and his body language hardly inspired confidence. Still showed glimpses of his brilliance, notably when setting up the Ramires chance, but needs to do more.

Diego Costa: 5
His poor clearance teed up West Ham’s opener and he spent a bit too much time looking at the referee and demanding free-kicks. But still ran himself ragged when Chelsea were down to 10. The situation meant he lacked support and had little chance to shine.

John Mikel Obi: 7
Came on for Fabregas at the break and played a huge part as Chelsea took control for much of the second period. Retained possession with a calmness that was much needed in the hurly burly of a London derby.
