The world’s best paraclimbers gather at the Westway Sports Centre

This weekend the Westway Sports Centre will host elite paraclimbers from around the world who are taking part in the first International Federation of Sport Climbing Paraclimbing Cup to be held in Great Britain.

The event, which is organised by the British Mountaineering Council, is free of charge to spectators and it provides a fantastic opportunity to catch the GB Paraclimbing Team in action – including World Paraclimbing Champion Fran Brown [pictured right].climbing2

Climbers will compete against others with similar disabilities in six categories: B1 Total Blind; B2 Vision less than 5%; B3 Vision less than 5%-20%; Amputee – leg; Amputee – arm; Neurological physical disability (NPD); and Seating.

Matt Tomlinson, head of climbing at Westway Sports Centre, said: “We are very proud to host the first Paraclimbing Cup to be held in Great Britain and supporting our Team GB athletes.

“Last year’s Paralympics certainly helped transform people’s attitudes and perceptions of disabled people.

“We’ve seen first-hand the huge amount of interest in Westway Sport Centre’s range of accessible sports, especially climbing.

“This weekend’s free-of-charge event is a great opportunity to see paraclimbing at its best and the Westway climbing team will be on hand to give advice and information to those who’ve been inspired and want to give accessible climbing a try.

“It’s fun, it keeps you fit and it’s a great way to meet like-minded people.”

The qualifying rounds will take place on Saturday 21 September and the final will be on the following day.
