Swindon v Chelsea player ratings

Chelsea eased into the fourth round of the Capital One Cup with a commanding performance against Swindon. Here’s how we rated the players in their 2-0 win at the County Ground.

Mark Schwarzer: 7
Made a couple of decent saves when called upon, but was barely worked.

Cesar Azpilicueta: 6
Solid enough but not as effective going forward as he can be. Defensively fine but looked like he needs more game time to get match sharpness.

David Luiz: 7
A silly backheel will have had Jose Mourinho jumping up and down in frustration, but other than that he was impressive – both in defence and in midfield after the break. Almost scored with a vicious free-kick and was always involved.

Gary Cahill: 6
Generally steady, but had a nervy moment in each half. Sometimes seems better off being busy throughout, as his concentration can wane when he’s not involved.

Ryan Bertrand: 7
Efficient and dependable. Supported the attack well and was never caught out defensively.

Michael Essien: 8
Excellent display on his return to the side. Plenty of pace and power but also played with great responsibility. Mature and impressive.

Kevin De Bruyne: 5
No lack of effort but gave the ball away too cheaply, too often. There is so much more to come from the talented Belgian.

Juan Mata: 6
Obviously eager to impress and was heavily involved, but not able to dictate play as he can. Looks like he needs a run of matches to get back to his best but still has to convince Mourinho he deserves it and can fit into the system. Showed glimpses of his quality but has much more to offer.

Willian: 6
Busy but wasted a couple of good chances, notably when he greedily opted to shoot late on when Fernando Torres would have had an open goal.

Fernando Torres: 9
Superb. Chased everything, looked genuinely sharp and deserves to have played himself into the team to face Tottenham on Saturday. His eagerness showed with his goal and glorious skill and pass set up Ramires for the second. Unlucky not to add to his tally, particularly after a fine late run.

Ramires: 8
Enjoyed an excellent 35 minutes and a wonderful finish for his goal before going off injured. His early introduction helped Chelsea’s dynamism no end. He is needed for Saturday against Spurs.

John Terry: 7
A no-frills display. Effortlessly in control during his 45 minutes on the pitch.
