Richmond’s other Hill

Richmond FC, one of the region’s smaller but historically important rugby union clubs, began their quest for promotion by beating Hartpury College 30-21 on Saturday.

The National League Two South outfit were busy over the summer, strengthening the squad as they look to build on an impressive third place in National League Three South last season.

Fly-half Matt Keville and locks Will Warden and James Taylor have been recruited from Loughborough Students, and Richmond director of rugby Steve Hill told West London Sport he is pleased with the new additions.

“They have made a strong impression and will put a lot of pressure on the guys currently in the team,” he said.

“We’ve also brought in centre Barney Pascall from Old Patesians who’s also been playing very, very well.”

Pre-season was promising for the club, with excellent hard-fought wins against Rosslyn Park and historic rivals Blackheath.

Hill, formerly director of rugby for English Students and Oxford University, added: “It was really pleasing to go across to Park and win, because for a good part of the game they put out a very strong side.

“I used 34 players and against Blackheath 27, so I’ve got some difficult decisions in terms of the starting XV.”

Hill has two big assets in last season’s player’s player of the year Chris Davis and wing James Greenwood, who has been in devastating form

“They’re both fit and raring to go,” added Hill, who has also had a spell as forwards coach at Harlequins.

“James scored 20-plus tries last year and five in two games already this season, so I’m pleased we’ve got that sort of firepower.”
