Rangers ready to make £7.5m bid for Tottenham man – report

QPR are set to make a £7.5m bid for Michael Dawson, the Sunday Mirror say.

Rangers, who tried to sign Dawson in the summer, are said to be planning another attempt to capture him from Tottenham after having an offer for Jonas Olsson rejected by West Brom.

R’s boss Harry Redknapp recently insisted he had given up hope of signing Dawson and Spurs boss Andre Villas-Boas has made it clear he has no intention of selling him.

But it is claimed that if Dawson – who flatly refused to move to Loftus Road in August – says he wants to leave, Villas-Boas would have trouble keeping him.

The Sunday Mirror also claim that Aston Villa are reluctant to sell striker Darren Bent to QPR, who supposedly want him.

The Mail on Sunday report that Newcastle have had bid accepted by Marseille for striker Loic Remy – a player QPR definitely do want.

The Sunday People report Fulham’s interest in Rennes midfielder Yann M’Vila – another of Rangers’ transfer targets.

Fulham’s Chris Baird is wanted by West Brom and Reading, according to the Sunday Mirror.

Baird apparently wants to stay at Craven Cottage, where his contract expires this summer, but could be tempted by the prospect of long-term deal elsewhere.

The People say German club Schalke are keen for Fulham boss Martin Jol to take over as their manager.

Meanwhile, Pep Guardiola will snub Chelsea and decide to become Manchester City manager in the summer, according to The Sun on Sunday.

He is said to have opted for City as he is convinced they can become force to rival his former club Barcelona.

The People say Ashley Cole intends to have talks with Manchester United when his Chelsea contract expires in the summer and would prefer to stay in the Premier League rather than move abroad.

The Sunday Express suggest Chelsea striker Fernando Torres’ former club Atletico Madrid will offer him the chance to return there on loan next season.

  • So we could buy another player of Dawson's ability for 7m? I think not somehow-unless you're another of those who think we're owned by a Billionaire philanthropist who'll spend money like water?

  • Dawson is a magnificent defender to have in the prem and maybe a couple more will arrive from spurs at the same time too. he must insists on doing any deals long before deadline day though and shop elsewhere if spurs want to delay the deals.

  • Just reading these comments as a QPR fan. Dawson looked like the best central defender I've seen in a long time. He has absolutely everything and would be a bargain at £7.5m frankly. Don't think he missed a pass all game!

  • @Essexian76
Dawson has a really good right foot when it comes to passing a ball, and he has made his long pass to the left midfielder his trademark. But the 90% pass completion rate is not telling the whole story. A central defender can easily score allmost 100% if he just make the simple passes to the full back, or to the central defender beside him, or the central midfielder coming short to collect the ball.

Dawson don't have a future in a team that want ball playing centre backs. But he is a decent back up now, and a really good leader. Thats why he is in the team, but I'm sure he will be sold in the summer, if AVB can get a ball playing CB as backup for Verthongen, Kaboul and Caulker.

  • @Rob..Dawson's pass completion rate was in excess of 90%-your point being what exactly?

  • I have consdiered that fact of course, and I've also considered the fact that Kaboul is often out injured long term-have you? I've also considered that Gallas' time is up and Caulker isn't yet the finished article-all these and more make it more likely that Dawson will stay and will not leave for 7.5m, that's for sure!

  • If you say dawson giving ball away.. then what about kyle walker ? he's totally crap this season and oftenly been switching off. Watching him gives me heart attack. Often gives away cheap fouls when he throws his possesion away. Might as well just sell gallas to QPR.

  • Essexian76, when was Dawson going for £9m? You are mistaken by that sum, as the summer deal was for TWO spurs players around that figure, not just Dawson.

Have you considered the fact thast Dawson is only playing because Kaboul is out injured and Vertonghen has mostly filled in as left back so far this season. Now we got our left backs fit again, Vertonghen is moved into the central role, Caulker is proving a good player, and Kaboul will soon be coming back, along with Gallas on the bench until the end of the season.
I didn't like the idea of selling Dawson in the summer, but after the game with QPR yesterday, I have come to realise AVB's concern over him. He keeps playing rubbish long balls which doesn't work unless you are on a quick counter-attack, which AVB's spurs does not do!

Dawson has played a few games to backup our valuation. He is a good defender but not right for Spurs anymore as we have changed but he hasn't. AVB should sell him at £7.5 as thats a massive profit on him, if we can off load Jenas, Huddlestone, Bentley, Livermore and Adebayor all in the same window, Spurs would actually become a better team (all be it a small squad). With those sales a decent midfielder and a world class striker to replace them, Spurs would be hitting for a top2-3 finish.

  • So, let's get this right-Dawson, when out of the team-turns down QPR for 9m,before the season starts. QPR are now bottom, Spurs are doing OK and Dawson's playing in the side as captain-and now you're suggesting he'll go for 7.5m with the possibilty of championship football to look forward to? You're making this up aren't you?

    • Hi Essexian76

It's not our story. It's a daily round-up we do of stories from the newspapers and separate from our own news content. The intention is to make this very clear.

  • I agree, lose count of the amount of times he squanders possession with the long passes. Plus we have caulker anyway who needs games to progress.
