MK Dons v Chelsea player ratings
Chelsea cruised into the fifth round of the FA Cup with a 5-1 mauling of MK Dons. Here’s how we rated the Blues players in the victory at Stadium:MK.
Thibaut Courtois: 7
Made relatively straightforward saves from Rob Hall and Daniel Powell in the second half in a commanding display. Had no chance with the goal from the cruel deflection off Nemanja Matic.
Branislav Ivanovic: 7
Involved in many an attack and showed his strength defensively. Played a key role in Oscar’s third goal just before the interval with a purposeful run inside that created space.
Gary Cahill: 7
Eager to impress after getting his chance ahead of Kurt Zouma and did so. Confident and assured in possession and unruffled in defence.
John Terry: 7
Every bit as good as Cahill, dominating in the air and instigating plenty of attacks with his refusal to simply clear his lines when under pressure or challenging for a 50-50 ball.
Baba Rahman: 7
Did a steady enough job despite a few indecisive moments at both ends. Got forward well and was involved in the penalty, and also set up a great chance that Diego Costa wasted by getting a touch when Oscar would have had a tap-in.
Nemanja Matic: 7
Solid and reliable but had a few testy moments as Chelsea committed men forward and were caught out by a couple of swift breakaways in the first half. Looked far happier in a more organised second-half display.
Cesc Fabregas: 9
The Spaniard was given way too much freedom and he made full use of it, controlling play from the middle of the pitch and using his full range of passing to great effect – notably with delightful long balls that set up Eden Hazard’s one-on-one chance and the pass that led to the fifth goal.
Ruben Loftus-Cheek: 7
A fine run and pass created the second goal for Oscar and was the young midfielder’s best moment in a decent display. Full of running and promise but, operating further forward than in previous appearances, he did not have as much time in possession and was often crowded out.
Eden Hazard: 8
Some will be riled that the Belgian took 29 games to score his first goal of the season, most will be glad to see him back to his devastating best and playing with a smile on his face. Always threatening, always demanding possession, was strong on the ball and used it superbly to set up a number of chances – albeit against accommodating opposition.
Oscar: 9
A sensational third goal sealed a fine hat-trick but the Brazilian could easily have had six. He missed a couple of decent early opportunities but took his goals superbly well and made countless brilliant runs in behind, as well as dropping deep and doing his defensive work with minimum fuss.
Diego Costa: 7
Busy and awkward without quite finding his best form. Missed a great early chance but unselfishly set up the opener and stayed well clear of any trouble.
Bertrand Traore: 7
Grabbed his first Blues goal in his fifth substitute appearance and made the most of Chelsea’s dominance in a wide open game.
Willian: 6
Made little impression with the game already won, and took a knock that left him looking tentative.
Pedro 6
Sprightly without making much of an impact.
