Leicester v Chelsea player ratings
Chelsea are on the verge of being crowned champions after coming from behind to beat Leicester. Here’s how we rated the players in Wednesday’s 3-1 win.
Petr Cech: 7
Made one brilliant save to keep out Paul Konchesky’s low strike but in the main he was untroubled.
Branislav Ivanovic: 8
Covered superbly on a couple of occasions when the pace of Jamie Vardy threatened to get in behind John Terry and Gary Cahill. And he was a major force in attack, most obviously when he muscled his way through to tee up the equaliser.
John Terry: 7
Great instincts to knock in the second goal on the rebound and once again used his nous and ability to read the game to great effect.
Gary Cahill: 8
Very commanding and confident from the outset – not an easy task against Vardy’s pace. His decision-making was hugely impressive, picking his moments to go for the 50-50s or drop off and defend deeper to counter the threat in behind.
Cesar Azpilicueta: 7
Another more than tidy showing form the Spaniard. Barely wasted possession and was available to back up in attack when required.
Nemanja Matic: 7
Particularly impressive after the interval, when he started to control the midfield with a masterful defensive job that freed up Cesc Fabregas. A strong tackling display in a feisty midfield battle.
Cesc Fabregas: 8
Some truly wonderful flicks and passes in and around the Leicester penalty box and also set up two goals. He could easily have laid on a further goal or two and was the most influential creative Chelsea player on display thanks to being afforded a little more time on the ball in the deeper role.
Ramires: 7
Provided a much-needed outlet and energy in support of Didier Drogba and scored a sumptuous goal. Ever-willing, and ever-available, this was a day when his work-rate overshadowed the obvious technical flaws in the Brazilian’s game.
Willian: 9
The best player on the pitch. Tracked back with his normal tenacity and willingness but was so impressive in attack too, creating several good situations, running at the Leicester defence and for once, taking the spotlight away from Hazard.
Eden Hazard: 7
A more than decent effort from the PFA Player of the Year, but it was as much about his strength and discipline as his dribbling and guile in the final third. He posed a threat throughout, but it was often from deeper until the last 30 minutes when he enjoyed greater freedom as the game became stretched.
Didier Drogba: 6
If truth be known the Blues legend was pretty woeful in the first half, wasting possession, looking off the pace and making a mess of the best Chelsea chance. But his goal was so vital, and even though he missed a decent opening soon after, his effort and that equaliser deserve praise.
