Juve v Chelsea player ratings

Chelsea’s 3-0 defeat against Juventus means they are in serious danger of failing to reach the knockout stage of the Champions League. Here’s how we rated the Blues players on a hugely disappointing night in Turin.

Petr Cech: 5
Made two good saves in the first half but overall it was not a good night for the Chelsea keeper. He might have done better for Juventus’ first goal and should definitely have done better for the third, when he rushed from his goal despite Ashley Cole appearing able to deal with the situation.

Branislav Ivanovic: 5
Usually so solid but had a difficult night at right-back, where he was caused problems by the likes of Fabio Quagliarella.

David Luiz: 5
Avoided the kind of glaring errors he can be prone to but generally endured a nervy evening and at times was dragged out of position by the movement of Juve’s attacking players.

Gary Cahill: 6
Did nothing particularly wrong but never looked comfortable and his partnership with Luiz doesn’t look convincing.

Ashley Cole: 7
Made a welcome return from injury. Known for his attacking forays but again showed he’s a top-class defender, tucking in from left-back to provide cover through the middle when needed. Also did superbly to clear off the line late in the first half.

César Azpilicueta: 5
Played in a more advance role on the right and made a strong start, using the ball well and offering good cover to Ivanovic. But his performance deteriorated before he was taken off on the hour mark.

John Obi Mikel: 6
A resolute display, but Juve unquestionably won the midfield battle.

Ramires: 5
Produced a couple of trademark bursts forward and cannot be blamed for the second goal, which came via a deflection off the Brazilian. But he can certainly be blamed for the first goal, when he allowed Andrea Pirlo to get away from him in the build-up. Great when covering ground but struggled over short distances to cope with Juve’s slick passing and movement.

Eden Hazard: 6
Deployed as Chelsea’s main forward and gave it a go, producing good movement off the ball and getting into some good positions in the first half. Missed a great chance though after being set up by Oscar.

Juan Mata: 5
Failed to impose himself in a game in which his role was absolutely pivotal.

Oscar: 7
Dangerous in the first half, attacking the home defence and creating a good chance for Hazard. Also performed an unfamiliar defensive role, dropping deep to try to pick up Pirlo on several occasions.

Victor Moses: 6
Full of running after coming on, but Juve’s second goal soon after his introduction was a hammer blow.

Fernando Torres: 5
Things aren’t getting any better for the Spaniard, who was brought on for the final 20 minutes and failed to trouble Juventus’ defence.
