I am totally shocked at my friend leaving us.
Big Macca – my room-mate for nearly seven years – had everything that is special in a person.
This word legend is used freely in modern times, but Alan was bigger than that word.
Macca was everything special about QPR. Professional, humorous – he was QPR through and through and carried it around with him.
I remember joining the club in 1991. I didn’t do so well, but Alan helped me so much to settle in. He gave me new desire and I never looked back.
People say we were a double act. That would be an understatement!
We had a great connection of professionalism and humour and some fantastic times on and off the field.
I can remember our silliness and can still see it now.
But Alan – like all the group in those days – once game-time arrived knew what the QPR faithful required; top commitment from us all on the field.
And there was no better man for that than Macca, who was there so many times to captain us during good times for everyone at the club.
Myself and anyone who was beside Macca in those great days realise what a great guy he was.
With so much distance between us (I now live in the US) I am deeply, deeply sad I did not get to see my friend one last time. But I will never forget my great friend and the special moments we shared.
Macca gave the best part of his life to QPR. As for me, I am glad and honoured to have had the chance to have known the best of the best.

Thanks Dave McIntyre for getting hold of statements and interviews from all of Alan McDonald's main QPR colleagues and friends from all over the world.
Macca will always be honoured and fondly remembered at QPR and in Northern Ireland - what a man.
