Have you got the edge? Find out at the Westway Urban Edge Festival
If you’re looking for a fun-packed weekend that celebrates London’s thriving urban sports scene then look no further than the Westway Sports Centre.
The Notting Hill facility is hosting the Urban Edge Festival – an event brimming with exciting activities and alternative sports – from 19-20 October.
Westway’s urban sports programme has never been so popular and Londoners of all ages can try a series of free ‘taster’ sessions to see if they’ve got ‘the edge’.
On the Saturday, budding young climbers can tackle a series of specially set routes on the big walls of the Westway Climbing Centre.
There will also be a chance to meet members of the Great Britain climbing team, who will be on hand to lend support and give advice to those starting out in the sport.
Later that day, festival-goers can take a front row seat to the Portobello Pop-Up Cinema and watch the high profile and eagerly anticipated climbing film ‘Reel Rock 8’.
Tickets are just £10 and the audience can expect a great vibe with all local climbing fanatics and enthusiasts gathering under one roof for this one night only screening.
The following day, the festival features more free ‘taster’ sessions for those wanting to scale the heights of one of the largest climbing walls in the UK.
Alternatively, you can pick up a chukka on the bike polo court and try an activity that puts a fresh, urban spin on an old sport.
And if that hasn’t tested your limits enough, sign up for a freerunning session with the founder of Freerunning, Sebastien Foucan, and learn first-hand from the man who put Daniel Craig through his paces at the start of the movie Casino Royale.
Sebastien’s session, aimed at adult beginners, starts at 11am and is priced at just £15.
The Sunday evening hosts the main event as the festival draws to a close with its ‘Speakers, Images, Action’ event starting at 7.30pm in the Portobello Pop-Up Cinema.
The best practitioners in their field will gather to discuss their experiences, philosophies and inspirational stories about boundaries explored and lives lived to the full in the city.
Expert freerunner Sebastien Foucan will be joined by top UK climber Neil Gresham and infamous urban explorer Bradley L Garrett.
Raphael Munton, part of the Climbing team at Westway Sports Centre said: “We are really excited to be holding the Urban Edge Festival at Westway.
“It’s a great opportunity to showcase the amazing urban sports we offer and encourage people to try a new activity through our free taster sessions.
“The festival will give Londoners a chance to hear from inspirational professionals who are at the top of the game, talking about their experiences and showcasing how they have made successful careers out of the urban sports they love.”
