Harrow Borough manager Anderson calls for radical change
Harrow Borough manager Dave Anderson says non-League clubs are involved in too many competitions and should play fewer matches.
As well as the Ryman Premier League, Borough compete in the FA Cup, FA Trophy, Isthmian League Cup, London Senior Cup and Middlesex Senior Cup.
And Anderson, who feels the fixture pile-up leads to fatigue and inconsistency, believes teams at his club’s level should no longer compete in county competitions.
“One of the problems sides at our level face is the amount of cup competitions we play in,” he told West London Sport.
“It’s hard to get something out of competitions like the FA Cup and FA Trophy when we have the county cups as well.
“It’s hard to be consistent in the league too and that has shown in our form so far this season.
“I think some restructuring needs to take place. I would like to see clubs like ours leave the county competitions.”
Anderson, whose previous clubs include Northwood and North Greenford United, is also in favour of leagues being restructured.
“I think a 24-team, three going up and three going down structure – like the Football League – would benefit clubs at our level too,” he explained.
“I think that’s ultimately what the FA want to achieve and that would be welcomed.”

This interesting debate produced the following quote from the current Harrow Borough Manager after around 6and a half minutes of this debate ” I’ve been idiotic, I’ve ripped into Referees” he then goes onto talk about failing to understand why some Referee’s will not talk to him after games. It’s interesting listening and hopefully a helpful learning point for Managers but also Referees.

If Dave Anderson thinks his club shouldn’t play in County Cups, he should ask his Club Secretary why Harrow Borough play in two! They are a Middlesex FA club also playing in the London FA’s Senior Cup – an entirely voluntary situation that the club have placed themselves in. Middlesex is the club’s main County affiliation, so is the only Senior Cup Harrow Borough have to play in.
It also makes no sense that he advocates fewer matches AND an increase in the size of divisions in the same interview. Is fixture congestion a problem or not?
