‘Patience is going to be required’ – reaction to Washington’s QPR move

QPR completed the signing of striker Conor Washington from Peterborough United on Tuesday afternoon.

The 23-year-old, a former postman, initially struggled after joining Posh from Newport County but has scored 15 goals for the League One club this season.

Here’s some of the reaction to his move to Loftus Road….

John Verrall, journalist and Peterborough fan:
“Conor Washington has been touted as QPR’s replacement for Charlie Austin, but it worth exercising caution over expecting him to be up to that standard immediately.

“Washington took two seasons to fulfil his potential at Posh, and patience is almost certainly going to be required with him at Loftus Road, too.

“He has all the talent required to make it in the Championship, but he has only been playing professional football for just over three years and still needs to refine his game.

“Washington does have pace, power and a wonderful first touch, though, and they are all attributes which will trouble defences at any level.

“His rapid progression since Graham Westley took charge at London Road has shown how talented a player he could develop into, and if he receives the right coaching at QPR he will become a very dangerous striker.”

Sam Edwards, BBC Radio Cambridgeshire:
“Having signed for Posh in January 2014, Washington’s main problem has been a failure to convert chances, despite finishing the 2014/15 season as the club’s top scorer with 13 goals.

“However, since the arrival of Graham Westley to London Road in September 2015, he has – almost from nowhere – discovered a more ruthless nature to his game, scoring 13 goals in 14 games.

“Quick and strong, he has the ability to stretch games and put defenders under intense pressure, but the key has been support from advanced wingers and attacking midfielders.

“Having played in the ninth tier only as recently as September 2012, and having only had three in-form months, some may question whether the move is too soon.

“But Washington’s maturity, coupled with his desire and work-rate (he’s often the last one in the gym) means he will be fully committed to proving he is a Championship striker.”
