The half-time substitution of John Terry against Manchester City on Sunday provoked a strong debate about the Chelsea captain on Twitter.
Blues boss Jose Mourinho explained that Terry was replaced by the pacier Kurt Zouma to allow the defence to hold a higher line in the second half.
It led some to wonder if Terry, who turns 35 in December, should be replaced by a younger, more mobile centre-half – with Everton’s John Stones the most likely target.
But many are standing by their skipper, who played every single minute of Chelsea’s Premier League triumph last season.
Everton fans watching the Chelsea defence struggle at City were bracing themselves for a third Chelsea bid for Stones.
But some enjoyed poking fun at the Blues’ start to the season, remembering an earlier comment from pundit Paul Merson that Stones would “learn a lot more at Chelsea with John Terry”.
