Having twice let two-goal leads slip recently, there was no repeat this time as Chelsea made sure of the points. Here’s how we rated the players in their 4-1 victory at Stamford Bridge.
Petr Cech: 6
At fault for Wigan’s goal, making a poor decision to rush from his line towards Shaun Maloney. But Cech played a big part in Chelsea’s win by producing early saves to deny Maloney and Franco di Santo.
Cesar Azpilicueta: 8
Excellent defensively and going forward. Produced a number of good crosses from the right, including a great delivery which almost led to a goal for Fernando Torres. Was also the driving force for Chelsea’s second and fourth goals.
Branislav Ivanovic: 6
Sloppy at times, not least when allowing Maloney away from him for Wigan’s goal. Redeemed himself though with some important defensive work as Chelsea absorbed spells of second-half pressure.
Gary Cahill: 6
Not at his best and picked up a knock before going off in the second half.
Ashley Cole: 6
Another player short of his best. His passing was wayward at times.
David Luiz: 7
Played very well in midfield. Dropped deep to protect the defence and was also effective going forward. Produced a great pass in the build-up to the opening goal.
Frank Lampard: 7
Quiet in spells, but overall had a good game and took his goal really well. Was unlucky with a couple of other chances too.
Ramires: 7
Effective drifting in from the right and took his goal well.
Oscar: 7
Steady rather exciting on this occasion. Caused Wigan problems with his movement and his link-up play was tidy.
Eden Hazard: 7
A constant threat to the Latics defence with his mazy runs and range of passing. Created Chelsea’s all-important third goal.
Fernando Torres: 6
Set up the first goal and produced other moments of quality. Missed chances to score though, including a sitter when he shot tamely at Ali Al Habsi after the keeper had parried Ramires’ shot.
