Chelsea v Swansea player ratings

Chelsea slumped to their second shock home defeat in a week, losing the Capital One Cup semi-final first leg against Swansea despite dominating much of the game. Here’s how we rated the Blues players on a dismal night at Stamford Bridge.

Ross Turnbull: 6
A spectator for nearly the entire game. Had no chance with the first goal and little hope with the second. Would his best bet have been to foul Danny Graham on the edge of the box and take a red card for the team?

Cesar Azpilicueta: 7
The Spaniard got forward well and was comfortable in defence. Could have shown better quality in the final third though.

Gary Cahill: 8
Excellent again. Mature and classy bringing the ball out, dominant defensively and blameless for the goals.

Branislav Ivanovic: 5
Take the diabolical errors away and he actually did well. Was unlucky with a fine curling effort, tried his heart out and was desperate to make amends for his first mistake. But there’s no getting away from it, they were two dreadful blunders.

Ashley Cole: 6
One of his quieter games going forward. Steady at the back but made little difference at the other end.

David Luiz: 8
Superb in the first half and remained dominant after the interval. Passing was on the whole neat and tidy, and he played some wonderful longer passes too. Should have scored after a great run into the box but his first-time shot was too close to the keeper. Also unlucky with a free-kick. Ran the midfield and didn’t deserve to be on the losing side.

Ramires: 6
Quiet after the break. Chasing the game and relying on intricate passing and subtle flicks is not his forte, but he never stopped running.

Oscar: 6
One or two promising moments but struggled after the interval as Swansea defended deeper. His confidence has taken a knock since the change of manager and – despite a whole-hearted display – he doesn’t look the same player we saw at the start of the campaign.

Eden Hazard: 8
Chelsea’s best attacking player. Great run in the first half and his pass should have led to a goal for Juan Mata. Unselfish – and unlucky.

Juan Mata: 6
Missed that relatively simple chance before the break and was unusually wasteful when he had good possession in dangerous areas on a couple of occasions. Still a major influence even when kept relatively quiet.

Fernando Torres: 5
Simply not good enough. One first-half opening when he ambled towards the six-yard box as Mata weaved his way through summed him up. Lacks conviction and needs to show he wants it and still has the instinct and desire. It really is now or never for the Spaniard.

Frank Lampard: 6
Only had 20 minutes to shine and couldn’t influence things from deep. Had one decent strike at goal. Maybe should have been on earlier.

Demba Ba: 7
Provide more of a goal threat in 10 minutes than Torres managed all game. Ludicrously booked for diving and netted a beautiful ‘goal’ that should have stood. Also won a couple of important headers. He looks the part.
