Chelsea v Rubin player ratings

Chelsea will fancy their chances of reaching the Europa League semi-finals despite conceding an away goal against Rubin Kazan. Here’s how we rated the players in their 3-1 victory.

Petr Cech: 6
Had a couple of unconvincing moments, with one uncharacteristic charge from goal to claim a cross and another weak punch. He was otherwise largely untroubled and his positioning meant he never looked like being beaten from long range.

Cesar Azpilicueta: 6
Used the ball well, and got forward plenty. Caught out once trying to play offside, but was steady and now looks fully integrated.

Ryan Bertrand: 8
Has a great opportunity to show his quality during Ashley Cole’s absence and looked more relaxed. Gave one of his best performances in a Blues shirt. A sensational first-half run almost led to a goal. He supported the attack and defended impressively.

David Luiz: 7
Influential in both defence and attack. He was barely troubled defensively and his willingness to bring the ball out, support the attack and force opposition midfielders to break rank is crucial in freeing up space. Fabulous long pass for the opening goal.

Terry conceded a penalty.

John Terry: 7
Comfortable and assured and unlucky to concede the penalty. His presence is always reassuring and his distribution from the back and the impact it has on the team is very much underrated.

Frank Lampard: 7
His passing was not up to his usual standard but once again he was prepared to reign in his attacking instincts and play for the team. On countless occasions he tracked back, closed down and prevented potentially dangerous situations developing into chances.

Ramires: 6
Solid, steady and disciplined but plays better with the more obvious defensive qualities of John Mikel Obi alongside him. Rubin’s often deep back-line limited his lung-busting running which is what sets him apart from his peers.

Juan Mata: 8
Immaculate as ever. The one player Rafael Benitez knows he can ill-afford to rotate. The attacking fulcrum and a player who always accepts responsibility and is always available. Classy.

Victor Moses: 7
A spectacular goal, although it actually came of his shin. A threat throughout with his direct running and pace.

Yossi Benayoun: 7
A player with exceptional talent, vision and awareness. And at times he showed it, albeit against average opposition. Needs games, but justified his inclusion and a bit of second-half skill on the break was a joy to watch.

Fernando Torres: 9
Scored twice and made the other goal. Bright, sharp and dangerous throughout. Great improvisation for the opening goal and a confident, powerful header for the second. Every display can still seem to go to either extreme but was making runs off the ball that he often doesn’t. More of the same please.

Eden Hazard: 7
Scared Rubin to bits in his 25-minute substitute appearance. Could easily have set up a couple of goals.
