It was a comfortable victory for Chelsea in the semi-final of the Club World Cup in Japan. Here’s how we rated the players in their 3-1 win over Monterrey.
Petr Cech: 6
Didn’t have much to do bar a couple of routine saves. Was left exposed for Monterrey’s goal.
Cesar Azpilicueta: 5
The only Chelsea player not to have a comfortable game. Was caused problems by wide-man Jesus Corona late in the first half.
Branislav Ivanovic: 6
Untested at the back. Missed a decent chance to score in the first half.
Gary Cahill: 6
Comfortable. Played Monterrey onside for their late consolation goal though.
Ashley Cole: 7
Generally less attacking under Rafael Benitez but still likes to get forward, as he showed by setting up Chelsea’s first goal.
David Luiz: 8
A revelation in midfield, especially in the first half. Could be a great option for Chelsea in that position if he is able to perform there against better opposition.
John Obi Mikel: 6
Had little to do. Switched off a couple of times as Monterrey pushed forward in the closing stages.
Oscar: 7
Less direct than usual, so Monterrey’s defenders were largely spared the ordeal of Oscar running at them. He was at the centre of much of Chelsea’s best work though, linking play nicely and producing a lovely reverse-pass in the build-up to the opening goal.
Juan Mata: 7
Took his goal well and was generally effective.
Eden Hazard: 7
Unlucky not to score in the first half and did brilliantly to set up the second goal.
Fernando Torres: 7
Got a huge slice of luck when his shot was deflected in for the second goal. Lovely ball to Mata in the build-up to the third though.
Frank Lampard: 6
A welcome sight for Chelsea when he came on as a second-half substitute.
