Chelsea v Brentford player ratings

Chelsea enjoyed what turned into a comprehensive victory in their FA Cup fourth-round replay at Stamford Bridge. Here’s how we rated the players in Sunday’s west London derby.

Chelsea

Peter Cech: 6
Had little to do but commanded his area well.

Branislav Ivanovic: 6
Was occupied by Clayton Donaldson – who gave Ashley Cole problems in the first game – for much of the match but had more freedom as the game became stretched. Set up Chelsea’s second goal.

John Terry: 7
Playing against a lone striker he was rarely tested on his return to the side and managed to get a goal too.

Gary Cahill: 6
Solid enough but was fortunate when he was wrong-footed by Marcello Trotta, who netted but was denied a goal because a free-kick had already been awarded to Brentford for a foul by David Luiz on Adam Forshaw.

Ashley Cole: 7
Given food for thought by the impressive Forshaw but held his ground and made sure the youngster’s best moments came when he drifted in from the right.

David Luiz: 8
An ugly shoulder-barge on Jake Reeves aside, Luiz was impressive throughout, closing down effectively and using the ball well in a key contest with Brentford’s three-man midfield.

Frank Lampard: 7
Missed a couple of decent chances but atoned with a crisp finish for Chelsea’s third goal – his 199th for the club.

Victor Moses: 7
His pace and directness gave Jake Bidwell problems on the flank.

Juan Mata: 9
Once again Chelsea’s stand-out performer. Scored their all-important opening goal, laid on the third for Lampard, and was a constant problem for Brentford as he picked up space at will.

Oscar: 7
Great to watch as always. Missed a good chance in the first half, when he hit the post from close range, but made amends by netting Chelsea’s second goal and crossing for Terry to complete the scoring.

Demba Ba: 6
Quiet for much of the game, although he did play a key role in Mata’s goal.

Eden Hazard: 7
Did well after coming on as a substitute with 25 minutes to go.

Brentford

Simon Moore: 6
Not his best game and could have done better for Oscar’s goal. The young keeper still managed to show glimpses of his potential though when he was assertive in the air during a spell of first-half pressure.

Shaleum Logan: 7
Solid defensively and linked up very well with Forshaw on the right-hand side.

Harlee Dean: 6
Gave his all and played an important part in helping Brentford get to the break on level terms. Will be disappointed not to have prevented Oscar’s goal, however.

Tony Craig: 7
Shaky on occasions but totally committed and refused to be out-muscled by Ba.

Jake Bidwell: 6
Battled hard against the impressive Moses for much of the game but his biggest problems came after the Nigeria international went off as Chelsea poured forward in the final quarter of the match with Brentford tiring.

Toumani Diagouraga: 6
Good in the first half but lost his way after the break and made a costly mistake in the build-up to Chelsea’s second goal.

Adam Forshaw: 8
Showed his potential with a cracking first-half display. Only a youngster yet reads the game superbly and played the right-sided role to perfection, knowing exactly when to drift in from the flank and pick up space. Composed on the ball and solid defensively too.

Jonathan Douglas: 7
Inevitably struggled once the floodgates opened but for the first hour he was superb in midfield, winning the ball to great effect and helping Diagouraga protect the back four.

Tom Adeyemi: 7
Another who faded as the game wore on but deserves much credit for an excellent first-half display.

Clayton Donaldson: 7
Put in some great work down the left and it was a pity for Brentford that by the time he was moved inside they had conceded the first goal and the initiative was with Chelsea.

Marcello Trotta: 7
Worked hard up front and was desperately unfortunate to be denied a goal in the first half.

Harry Forrester: 6
A real blow for Brentford that Chelsea broke the deadlock as the Bees’ potential matchwinner was about to come on. Struggled to get into the game as the Blues began to overwhelm their opponents.
