Brentford v Fulham player ratings
Brentford cruised to a 3-0 victory over Fulham in the final west London derby of the season. Here’s how we rated the players from both teams at Griffin Park.
Brentford
David Button: 7
Had a quiet afternoon until called upon twice in the final five minutes to deny Ross McCormack. When he was beaten, the frame of the goal came to his rescue – again denying McCormack.
Maxime Colin: 8
A classy performance from the Frenchman, who was tidy at the back and showed his quality on the ball, most notably when storming past four Fulham defenders in one run.
Yoann Barbet: 8
Constantly aware of the danger posed by McCormack and later Moussa Dembele, and made a brilliantly-timed challenge on his compatriot in the second half, denying him a route to goal.
Harlee Dean: 8
Gobbled up everything in the air, and was also a threat in the opposition box, twice heading wide from corners. Didn’t always track McCormack on the ground, but otherwise a fine display.
Tom Field: 8
An excellent debut from the 19-year-old, who showed early on he held no fear by forcing Jazz Richards back 30 yards prior to the opening goal. Had an even more direct hand in the third goal, delivering the corner from which Scott Hogan thumped home. Wasn’t afraid to get involved, though one tackle led to an injury that forced him off.
Nico Yennaris: 7
Provided a good screen for the back four – something Fulham were sorely missing – and while he was hit-and-miss with his passing, he did set up a couple of chances.
Ryan Woods: 8
Often busy and combative in the centre, he also showed a great range of short and long passes and had a shot straight at keeper Marcus Bettinelli
Sam Saunders: 8
His superb lofted finish set the tone for an outstanding first 45 minutes for Brentford, and the one-time Fulham trainee was at the heart of it. Saunders’ tenacious style drew fouls, particularly from a frustrated Richards, though he was less of an influence as the game wore on and was replaced by Josh Clarke for the final 10 minutes.
Konstantin Kerschbaumer: 9
Surely the Austrian’s best display in a Brentford shirt and a stand-out performer in a vibrant first half for the home side. His beautifully weighted ball set up Hogan for the second goal, he rarely wasted a pass – his completion rate second only to Fulham’s Tom Cairney – and forced Bettinelli into a couple of saves.
Sergi Canos: 8
Benefited from Field’s great work to set up the opener, but he must take credit too for well-executed pass. Started wide but played through the middle after Hogan was withdrawn, and got a couple of shots away, dealt with by the busy Bettinelli. Liverpool have been impressed with him during his loan spell – so have Bees fans.
Scott Hogan: 8
Touched the ball just eight times in 45 minutes – but the two goals he netted killed off Fulham. Wasn’t happy at being replaced but Bees head coach Dean Smith said it was part of a carefully-managed programme. After 18 months out, Hogan is determined to make the most of his reborn career – this double took him to five goals in just 108 minutes since his return.
Andy Gogia: 7
Replaced Hogan and showed flashes of his ability wide on the right. Linked up with Colin at times, and was another to be denied by Bettinelli.
Jack O’Connell: 6
Came on at left-back for the injured teenager Field, though wasn’t always comfortable. In fact his best contribution came up field, with a shot well saved by Bettinelli.
Josh Clarke: 7
Looked bright in the last 10 minutes after coming on for Saunders.
Fulham
Marcus Bettinelli: 7
Kept busy throughout the game, saving shots of varying quality from Kerschbaumer, Woods, Canos, Gogia and O’Connell. Could do little about Hogan’s brace but probably regrets attempting to close down Saunders for the opener. His kicking was wayward, too.
Jazz Richards: 6
His indecision led to Brentford’s move for the first goal and his passing let him down at times, but he was strong in the tackle and in the air in his own half. It wasn’t enough to spare him being withdrawn at half-time.
Richard Stearman: 6
Another inconsistent display. Tidied up at the last minute on a few occasions but appeared to lose track of Hogan at the corner from which he scored his second. Did guide a header beyond the far post at the other end.
Fernando Amorebieta: 5
Never recovered from a nightmare first 10 minutes. Caught off guard by Canos’ ball into Saunders for the opener and never looked convincing against Hogan, who left him trailing in his wake as he put the Bees 2-0 up.
Tim Ream: 6
Won a few headers but generally struggled at left-back to cope with Saunders and Canos, and was part of the collective switch-off that saw Hogan score Brentford’s third.
Tom Cairney: 7
Stood out in an otherwise flat Fulham midfield. His passing was good and occasionally penetrative, like when he played in McCormack, who hit the bar. Also won a few balls in the air.
Scott Parker: 7
Put himself about with varying degrees of success, and seemed to feel he wasn’t sufficiently protected by the referee. His most tenacious moment led to him riding a couple of challenges and sliding in a pass for McCormack, but the striker hit the post.
Rohan Ince: 5
Much is made of Brentford’s lack of height, but their midfield ran rings around 6’ 3” Ince, who looked off the pace until he was withdrawn at half-time.
Ryan Tunnicliffe: 6
Used the ball efficiently from wide on the left and shot wide late on as Fulham pressed for a consolation, but much of the first half passed him by.
Lasse Vibe Christensen: 6
Played in a second-striker role but ended up drifting between central midfield and wide right in the first half, as he struggled to adapt. His decision-making in the final third was poor and he was taken off after 65 minutes following an injury.
Ross McCormack: 8
The only serious threat to Brentford, he hit the woodwork twice and had a free-kick saved late on by Button. Also picked out some good passes but neither he nor his team-mates could break through.
Ryan Fredericks: 7
Replaced Richards at half-time and was an immediate improvement, putting in a good defensive shift and making runs down the right flank.
Moussa Dembele: 6
Left on the bench as he was apparently not “focused”, according to head coach Slavisa Jokanovic. Came on at half-time when the damage was done but still endured a frustrating time – he headed over from a corner, was denied by a fabulous tackle by Barbet and later dropped to the floor in trying to win a free-kick.
Emerson Hyndman: 6
Brought on when Christensen limped off and was bright in bursts, seeing a shot fly well off target.
