Brentford v Chelsea player ratings

It was an afternoon to remember for Brentford, who came so close to a sensational victory over the European champions. Here’s how we rated the players in the thrilling FA Cup clash at Griffin Park.

Brentford

Simon Moore: 7
Wasn’t as busy as he might have expected to be. It took fine goals from Oscar and Fernando Torres to beat the young goalkeeper.

Lee Hodson: 8
The on-loan Watford defender played a big part in helping Brentford settle after a shaky start. He was the first to get the ball down and play it simply, and his decision-making was intelligent throughout.

Harlee Dean: 9
The young defender had Torres in his pocket for much of the game. Dean frustrated the Spaniard and gave him no time or space to assert himself. The one time Torres did lose Dean, he scored.

Tony Craig: 7
Was calm, collected and focused on doing his job and doing it well. He contributed with the rest of the back four to limiting Chelsea to scuffed efforts and wild swings from outside the box for much of the match.

Shaleum Logan: 9
Arguably the man of the match, despite Harry Forrester understandably taking the plaudits. Moved from right to left-back in the absence of the suspended Jake Bidwell and was superb. A tireless, fearless and dangerous performance.

Adam Forshaw: 8
Played in a slighly more central position than he has of late and came in off the right to good effect. His work and strong tackling in the centre helped deal with the threats of Ramires and Frank Lampard.

Jonathan Douglas: 7
The skipper never stopped working to stop Lampard and Ramires influencing the game from deep-lying positions. His passing was not what it usually is, and he wasn’t able to be as much of an influence as he would have liked, but it was the superb work he did off the ball that helped Brentford’s cause.

Toumani Diagouraga: 8
Was also essential to the Bees midfield. He won the ball countless times as Chelsea began to press. The triumvirate of Forshaw, Diagouraga and Douglas was essential in coping with Chelsea’s midfield.

Harry Forrester: 8
Felt he didn’t have his best game – despite the man-of-the-match award – but as he grew into the match he and Logan caused all sorts of problems for Branislav Ivanovic and Marko Marin down the left-hand side. He coolly converted the penalty to put Brentford back into the lead and without him any Bees threat would have been nullified.

Clayton Donaldson: 8
Was asked to play in a right-sided role, where boss Uwe Rosler has used him a number of times this season. Was excellent in the role, especially off the ball, causing problems for Ashley Cole and Ryan Bertrand.

Marcello Trotta: 7
Took his goal like a real poacher, ensuring he was first to the ball to pounce on Ross Turnbull’s parry. He was limited to less touches in the second half and was eventually substituted, but he worked as hard for the team as anyone else.

Tom Adeyemi: 7
Was impressive when he came on and won a penalty with a bold run into the penalty area.

Chelsea

Ross Turnbull: 5
Looked shaky. Could have done better when conceding the penalty and should have done much better with Forrester’s shot for Brentford’s opener.

Branislav Ivanovic: 6
An improvement on recent displays. Was caught out by a couple of simple long balls but generally did okay. The fact he was under so much pressure in the first half was mainly down to an inept performance from Marko Marin.

Ashley Cole: 6
Started superbly and looked like he would dominate the left flank in unison with Ryan Bertrand. But although defensively solid, he made little impact in attack after that.

Gary Cahill: 6
Another solid effort from a player who provides consistent and reliable performances no matter what carnage is happening around him.

John Terry: 7
Great to see him back and it’s easy to forget how important he is. Chelsea would more than likely have folded without his impressive leadership. His presence has been sorely missed, even if those coming in have oodles of talent.

Frank Lampard: 6
Plenty of endeavour but struggled in the first half as Chelsea failed to come to terms with the conditions and opposition. It’s no shock he looks twice the player when Mata is playing.

Ramires: 6
Looked a little shell-shocked before the interval but, like Lampard, recovered to turn in a typically energetic effort. Got to grips with the surface as the game developed.

Ryan Bertrand. 5
Very quiet. Good work-rate but just didn’t offer enough in possession or influence matters in any way. Like most of his colleagues, wasteful in possession before half-time and also missed a glorious headed opportunity just before Torres struck.

Marko Marin. 5
Anonymous. Barely passed to a blue shirt. A real culture shock for the German and he was rightly withdrawn at the break. Still looks like he has real talent but hid it well at Griffin Park. Needs games to find his sharpness and that is unlikely while he is off the pace and struggling for match fitness. The time to judge his stop-start, injury-affected Chelsea career is next season.

Oscar. 8
Outrageous goal and never stopped running and hassling. Stood out in a woefully inadequate first-half Blues display. Deployed further forward after half-time and was rewarded for his efforts.

Fernando Torres. 6
Fabulous goal salvaged a draw but cut a sorry figure at times. It was a sensational strike though.

Juan Mata: 8
The irreplaceable Spaniard came on at half-time and provided the spark that got Chelsea back in the game. Still Chelsea’s key player and surely by now it’s obvious he has to start. Take him off when the game is won; don’t risk the alternative.
