Bayern v Chelsea player ratings

Chelsea missed out on the Uefa Super Cup after losing on penalties against Bayern Munich. Here’s how we rated the players on a disappointing night for the Blues in Prague.

Petr Cech: 8
Could have done better on a couple of occasions and would have expected to have saved at least one penalty. But made three, maybe four world-class saves and several other notable stops. His one-handed save to deny Mario Mandzukic was awesome.

Branislav Ivanovic: 6
Was never dominated by the relentless running of Franck Ribery but understandably never able to keep his opponent quiet either. Had a steady game.

David Luiz: 7
A pleasure to see him back and was as spiky and involved as ever. His great run helped set up Eden Hazard’s goal. Obviously provided one or two heart-in-mouth moments but defended impressively.

Gary Cahill: 7
Some nervy moments on the ball – particularly before the break. But defended with typical common sense and made some equally typically wonderful blocks.

Ashley Cole: 8
Made a couple of trademark covering tackles and was his normal calming influence. Did a fine job on Arjen Robben.

Ramires: 6
Not at his best and sent off for a second booking late in normal time. It was clearly an attempt to play the ball, but the Brazilian caught his man in his follow-through. Doesn’t have the quality of his fellow midfielders but his running is absolutely vital.

Frank Lampard: 7
Selfless. Sacrificed his own attacking instincts with commendable discipline and provided a crucial platform for the team and the four men who played ahead of him. The switch could well prolong his career.

Oscar: 9
Sensational before the interval and impressive throughout. Followed up his superb effort against Manchester United with another top-drawer performance. Majestic strike for the second Blues goal and his fine run created the opener.

Eden Hazard: 9
Outstanding. Pace, power, tricks and flicks and an end product too. Matches class with work-rate and is brave enough to run at world-class defenders time and time again.

Andre Schurrle: 7
Another good display from the German. Seems to have the impressive quality of playing to a high, consistent level. May lack the flair of some of his more illustrious team-mates but looks like a minimum guaranteed seven or eight out of 10 man. Great cross for the opening goal.

Fernando Torres: 7
Scored a glorious goal and was unlucky with another superb turn and instinctive shot in the first half. Quieter after the break, but less Jekyll and Hyde and that has to be encouraging.

John Mikel Obi: 6
Solid and impressive for 20 minutes but was then overrun as his colleagues tired in the closing stages.

Romelu Lukaku: 5
Didn’t really get properly into the game but showed his pace and power on a couple of occasions. The less said about the penalty the better.
