Basel v Chelsea player ratings
David Luiz’s late goal in a dramatic semi-final first leg left Chelsea on course for the Europa League final. Here’s how we rated the players in their 2-1 victory in Switzerland.
Petr Cech: 7
Produced a decent first-half save and commanded his area well.
Cesar Azpilicueta: 7
Did well defensively and when going forward. Was the victim of a daft refereeing decision for Basel’s penalty.
John Terry: 7
Calm and assured on his return to the starting line-up.
Branislav Ivanovic: 7
Was solid at the back and his aerial presence led to Victor Moses’ opening goal for the Blues.
Ashley Cole: 8
Made a welcome return after injury and did a fine job containing Mohamed Salah, who caused Tottenham problems in the quarter-finals.
David Luiz: 8
Aside from his goal, which the keeper should have prevented, Luiz was excellent in his midfield role. He was a threat going forward and protected his back four as well.
Frank Lampard: 6
A fairly quiet game for the veteran midfielder, but he was neat and tidy on the ball and willing to put a foot in when needed.
Ramires: 7
Energetic as always and was unlucky not to score in the first half.
Eden Hazard: 8
Missed a great chance in the first half but his overall display was very good. Time and time again he wriggled away from challenges with ease and his hold-up play was also excellent.
Victor Moses: 7
Offered pace and trickery down the flank and his goal gave Chelsea the upper hand.
Fernando Torres: 6
Worked hard up front and was denied by the woodwork. Still somewhat quiet though, especially compared with his other European performances.
Juan Mata: 6
Showed glimpses of his class after coming on for the final 20 minutes.
