Pochettino: We were much better than Chelsea
Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino praised his players after their defeat against Chelsea and insisted they were the better team.
Spurs were beaten 2-1 in their first home league game at Wembley, where Marcos Alonso’s late winner – his second goal of the match – gave the Blues all three points.
“We created more chances. The only problem was that they were more clinical and for us it was difficult to score,” Pochettino said.
“There is nothing to say about the tactics or performance. We were much better than Chelsea. It was clear that the idea of Chelsea was to counter-attack.
“We were unlucky and I am of course disappointed with the result, but not with the performance. I’m pleased with the players.”

The clever coach is the one who finds a way to win. Not to forever hark on about being the better side. How many times do we lose to Chelsea when we would appear to be the better side. This can’t be coincidence, bad luck, misfortune – whatever other excuses could be used – this is to do with players and the coach. As far as I can discern, time and time again, Chelsea’s goals against us come from our mistakes. Self implosion. Ali today giving a free kick away near the box when we know Chelsea have free kick specialists Alonso, Willian, Luiz. Wanyama gifting Chelsea the ball when we should have been the counter attacking threatening side. Lloris, a brittle presence as last man. I could write similar things going back years about Spurs players. Pochettino today, has I’m afraid been too apathetic, complacent and philosophical about defeat – sadly mirroring the Club’s attitude for far too long now! Keep on doing the same thing expecting a different outcome. Umm…..
