Terry inspired by contract uncertainty
Chelsea captain John Terry says playing for a new contract has provided the ideal motivation for him this season.
The 34-year-old defender’s deal runs out in the summer, but he has been an ever-present in the Premier League, helping the team to the top of the table and progress to the Champions League knockout stages.
Terry has played 36 games in total, scoring six goals – including the opener in Sunday’s Capital One Cup final win over Tottenham.
“The uncertainty has helped,” said Terry, who is keen to extend his deal. “The roles have reversed and now the power is in the club’s hands. That has inspired me.
“If this is my last year, then I hope it goes out on a bang. But I am feeling great and it would be the wrong time to go.”
Chelsea’s policy is to only offer one-year deals to players over 30, but manager Jose Mourinho has said a new contract for Terry is a formality.
Terry made his Blues debut in the League Cup against Aston Villa in 1998 and has made 658 league appearances, scoring 63 goals.
