Terry can follow Gullit’s lead – Hiddink
John Terry could follow Ruud Gullit’s example and make the transition from top player to manager, according to Guus Hiddink.
Chelsea legend Terry, 35, is out of contract this summer and has not been offered a new deal.
The former England captain has said he still wants to stay at Stamford Bridge.
But outgoing Chelsea boss Hiddink said the defender, who could have played his last game for the club following his red card against Sunderland and subsequent two-match ban, has the ability to become a success as a coach when he does end his playing career.
“John is very keen,” Hiddink said. “He has always been a leader. Tactically you could always rely on him, which is important.
“I had the experience with other players like [Ruud] Gullit, [Frank] Rijkaard , [Ronald] Koeman and [Johan] Neeskens.
“They were also in the later period of their career and then they start thinking ‘What should I do now?’. They loved to be involved in football.”
Hiddink’s fellow Dutchman Gullit joined Chelsea as a player in 1995 and took over as player-manger a year later, winning the FA Cup in 1997.
Hiddink added that he has talked to Terry, who made his Chelsea debut in 1998, about becoming a manager.
“The other day we were sitting next to each before the game in Bournemouth and we discussed a bit about sitting on that spot,” Hiddink added.
“He said it felt good. it was a hot spot, but he said it felt good.”
