Swansea v Chelsea player ratings
Chelsea had to battle back to earn a point after a frantic second half against Swansea. Here’s how we rated the players in the controversial 2-2 draw at the Liberty Stadium.
Thibaut Courtois: 5
Untroubled and in control both before and after Swansea’s equaliser when an overhit pass caught him out and he panicked and lunged in to concede a penalty.
Branislav Ivanovic: 7
Some rushed clearances and awkward moments in possession, but otherwise impressive. Always a threat in attack as shown for Diego Costa’s second goal, and was mindful of his defensive positioning from open play.
Gary Cahill: 8
An astonishing refereeing decision saw him the fall guy for Swansea’s second, but although the England defender dallied slightly he was clearly fouled. Used the ball well, as per the manager’s instructions, and looked confident.
John Terry: 8
Dominant and, like his fellow defenders, barely put a foot wrong. The Blues skipper, who suffered an ankle injury late on, played a couple of tremendous crossfield passes and showed his quality on the ball throughout. N’Golo Kante’s presence has helped Terry and Cahill a huge amount.
Cesar Azpilicueta: 6
Steady and unspectacular. The Spaniard was faultless going back towards his own goal but did not make much of an impact going forward.
N’Golo Kante: 9
Another supreme performance that perfectly demonstrated why he was brought. The Frenchman ran the midfield, winning tackles, using the ball simply and quickly, and instigating numerous attacks.
Nemanja Matic: 8
He has regained his confidence and mojo playing alongside Kante. The Serbian broke up play, broke from midfield and played a pro-active role – a far cry from the nervy midfielder we witnessed last season.
Willian: 7
Looked devastated to be substituted but had given his all and was simply taken off to be replaced by fresher legs. The Brazilian was Chelsea’s brightest attacker in a one-sided first half, although his set-piece delivery was wayward.
Oscar: 7
A delightful piece of control teed up Costa for the opening goal and he looked dangerous bursting from midfield and also covered considerable ground helping his fellow midfielders. But he should have scored with a late header.
Eden Hazard: 8
Made some devastating runs which so nearly created goals, but also failed to make to most of one or two excellent situations. Could have scored with a good first-half chance after a purposeful run and almost set up a late winner for Costa.
Diego Costa: 9
Scored a fine first-half goal and missed an absolute sitter, got booked, started an on-running battle with most of the Swansea defence, dribbled, tormented and showed his quality, could have won a penalty, could have been sent off, resisted constant provocation, and scored a stunning equaliser. Standard stuff from Costa.
Victor Moses: 6
Was lively and effective in the final 15 minutes, running at defenders and keeping things simple. But he did make a terrible hash of a great left-footed chance.
Cesc Fabregas: 7
Brought a calmness just when Chelsea started to get flustered and made an impact in a completely different way to his fellow sub Moses.
