Swansea boss Paul Clement felt a narrow formation was the best way to deal with Chelsea’s attacking threat.
The former Chelsea coach saw his team beaten 1-0 on his return to Stamford Bridge, where they managed to frustrate the champions.
With Pedro and Willian drifting in from the flanks, Clement set Swansea up to defend in numbers through the middle.
“We did OK. We did frustrate Chelsea with the way we set up,” said Clement.
“When you play against those wingers tucked in off the line it’s very important to defend solidly through the middle.
“We defended well and if we were going to let anything through then it was going to be out wide.”
Chelsea dominated the game but were unable to add to Antonio Rudiger’s second-half goal and did look anxious when the visitors attacked in the final stages.
“I was pleased our players didn’t fold. They continued to do their jobs defensively and at 1-0 you’re always in the game,” Clement added.
“They (Chelsea) became a little bit edgy and our players had the belief that they were going to create something.”
