Sturridge to get his way over striker role

Chelsea manager Roberto Di Matteo says he is likely to give Daniel Sturridge more chances to play in his preferred centre-forward role.

Sturridge has made it clear he would rather operate through the middle than out wide, but his outings as a striker have been limited.

But Di Matteo put him up front in place of Fernando Torres during Saturday’s goalless draw at QPR and expects the former Manchester City man to feature there more often this season.

Torres struggled against QPR.

“I think he will get more chances, yes,” said Di Matteo.

“As long as he keeps training well and, when he gets the chance, shows his qualities then that’s the way forward.”

However, the Blues boss insists he has no concerns about the form of Torres, who made a great start to the season but has been below par in his last two matches.

“No – absolutely not,” said Di Matteo. “You can’t put too much pressure on one player. We are a team.

“Everybody has a responsibility and we are looking for our other players to score goals as well.”
