Chelsea’s winning run came to an end in the derby at White Hart Lane. Here’s how we rated each Blues player in the 2-0 defeat against Tottenham.
Left badly exposed for both goals. Didn’t have much to do other than that. Produced a first-half save to keep out Eric Dier’s header.
Oh dear. The usually reliable Azpilicueta twice allowed goalscorer Dele Alli to drift behind him to score and in general the Spaniard was well short of his best.
Responsibility for the goals wasn’t solely with the players Alli sneaked in between to score – centre-backs Luiz and Gary Cahill were both at fault too. That was especially the case for the opening goal, when Luiz was guilty of ball-watching in the build up.
Woefully out of position in the build up to the all-important first goal. Like several of his team-mates, Cahill was well short of his best.
Could have done better for both goals but is easy to blame simply because he was close to the area in which Alli was allowed space. As the right wing-back his positioning for both goals wasn’t particularly poor. He worked hard on the right flank.
So often the enforcer, he was given a rare taste of his own medicine as Spurs’ Victor Wanyama dominated in midfield with a terrific display. For once, Kante was second best.
Had a reasonable game and created an early chance for Eden Hazard. Could have been tighter to Eriksen though.
Has looked good when Chelsea have been in full flow, but on a night when they were seriously tested defensively he simply didn’t perform. Out of position far too often.
Worked hard off the ball and tried to make things happen, but Spurs contained him well.
Combative up front as always. Forced a good save from Hugo Lloris with a low shot early in the second half.
Troubled Tottenham’s defence and was particularly bright in the first half. But the story of his night was two missed chances. The first was a shot narrowly wide and the second – a header wide from close range – came shortly before Spurs made it 2-0 so was a crucial moment in the game.
Added some energy when brought on midway through the second half but by then the momentum was Tottenham’s.
