Barkley ‘will be a very useful player’ for Chelsea

Maurizio Sarri says Ross Barkley has impressed him during pre-season.

Barkley’s first season at Chelsea was marred by hamstring trouble but he has played a prominent role in their recent friendlies.

The midfielder, signed from Everton last summer, faces plenty of competition for a place with the likes of Cesc Fabregas and new signing Jorginho at the club.

But new Blues boss Sarri likes what he has seen of Barkley since the England international’s return to action.

Sarri said: “I like him. He is a technical player. He does have to improve on the defensive phase.

“It’s difficult to play with Jorginho, Cesc and Ross all together but I like him. He will be a very useful player for us.”
