Newcastle 2 Chelsea 0
Chelsea’s excellent recent run was brought to an abrupt end, with on-loan QPR striker Loic Remy sealing their fate with a late goal.
Newcastle went ahead through Yoan Gouffran’s header midway through the second half and defended resolutely before Remy scored in the final minute.
The Blues, who had won their previous six matches, almost took a first-half lead when John Terry’s header from Juan Mata’s corner hit the bar.
Newcastle also survived a Chelsea penalty appeal following Mathieu Debuchy’s challenge on Mata, but the hosts were a much more dangerous attacking force after the break.
They nearly broke the deadlock when Moussa Sissoko’s shot went just wide, before Petr Cech denied the Magpies by saving from Remy.
But Cech was unable to rescue Chelsea when Gouffran ghosted in to meet Yohan Cabaye’s right-wing free-kick.
Jose Mourinho’s men were unable to find an equaliser, Tim Krul keeping out Willian’s shot and Debuchy blocking Samuel Eto’o’s follow-up.
Eden Hazard fired wide as the visitors continued to press, but Remy’s sixth goal since his move to Tyneside capped a fine Newcastle victory.
Vurnon Anita cut in from the flank and found the Frenchman, who fired in off the post.
