Potter savours much-needed Chelsea win
Graham Potter admitted his Saturday night would feel a lot better after his struggling Chelsea side eased the pressure on their head coach with a nervy 1-0 win over Leeds.
Potter has come under fire from Blues fans after defeats by Southampton and Tottenham in their past two matches and although there was some frustration from the home crowd as Leeds pressed hard for an equaliser, there was widespread relief at Stamford Bridge at the final whistle.
“I am delighted for the players and the supporters, because they are the most important people at the football club,” Potter said.
“If you don’t get results it’s my responsibility and I accept that. It has been a tough period for us all and it is nice to go home with a win.
“But we now have to prepare for a tough week and a really exciting game on Tuesday night when Borussia Dortmund come here in the Champions League.
“I am sure there will be a cracking atmosphere and a game we can all look forward to.”
Potter defended the changes he made in the second half as Leeds got back into the game, with the withdrawal of Raheem Sterling and Mateo Kovacic seeming to help the visitors.
“Raheem is coming back from an injury so we have to make those decisions, the game was getting stretched and we wanted to score a second goal,” Potter said.
“We were playing against one of the best teams in the Premier League for high intensity football and if the game becomes end to end it can be challenge for us but the boys stuck to it.
“We want to win with more comfort but with the run we are in it is not always easy to do.”
