Redknapp insists Havertz should have been sent off

Jamie Redknapp insisted there was “no doubt” that Kai Havertz should have been sent off for an elbow on Dan Burn during the first half of Chelsea’s game against Newcastle.

Havertz jumped with the Newcastle central defender to challenge for a header in the 38th minute and caught him in the face with an elbow, for which he was shown a yellow card.

But speaking at half-time, Sky Sports pundit Redknapp argued that Havertz should have received a more severe punishment.


“We all know you have to use your arms for elevation but there’s no doubt he’s endangered an opponent there,” he said.

“He comes across and his elbow is really high. His elbow is higher than his head. He catches him on the side of his face, he could have fractured his cheekbone easily.

“Dan Burn is 6ft 6in and he still managed to get him that high.”

Ex-Chelsea forward Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink also suggested that Havertz should have seen red for the challenge.

“Yes, you need to use your arms but his elbow stays there. I think he was naughty there,” he said.

“I like him as a player, he’s been doing absolutely magnificent. But that is bad.”
