Pochettino stands by decision to sell Hall

Mauricio Pochettino insists Chelsea were right to let Lewis Hall leave.

The 18-year-old left-back has impressed since signing for Newcastle in August.

He joined the Magpies on a season-long loan ahead of a permanent move next summer.

Hall caught the eye after breaking into Chelsea’s first team last season, making 11 appearances.

Many were therefore surprised he was sold in a deal worth an initial £28m.

But Blues boss Pochettino stands by the decision to sell the England Under-21 international, who was behind Ben Chilwell in the pecking order at Stamford Bridge.

“The player and the club took the best decision for both sides,” said Pochettino.

“He was unlucky that he could not play (more), but he has a good future and I hope he can settle well there.”

Meanwhile, Levi Colwill has been passed fit to return for Chelsea against Newcastle on Saturday, having missed the 4-4 draw with Manchester City prior to the international break because of a shoulder injury, and Reece James is expected to start.

Christopher Nkunku and Romeo Lavia are not yet ready to return, while Pochettino confirmed that Wesley Fofana will remain sidelined until the new year with a long-term knee injury.

Fofana has, however, resumed light training as he continues to edge towards a return to action.

Pochettino said: “It was nice to see him back on the grass.

“It was massive motivation for him and for us also to see him after a long time out. It’s good that he is starting to feel the grass.

“Levi Colwill is going to be in the squad but Romeo Lavia and Christopher Nkunku are out.

“They are both in good condition, Nkunku is a little bit ahead of Lavia, he was doing things with the group, but still not a full recovery to be part of the squad.”
