Mourinho hopeful over De Bruyne injury
Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho is hopeful a knee injury Kevin De Bruyne suffered during a pre-season friendly will not prove to be serious.
The Belgian, who was carried off on a stretcher during the Blues’ 4-1 win against a Malaysia XI in Kuala Lumpur, has flown back to London for an MRI scan.
But Chelsea appear confident that De Bruyne will avoid a long spell on the sidelines.
A lengthy period out of action would be a cruel blow for him, as he is keen to establish himself under Mourinho and has looked impressive during pre-season.
“When he was on the floor we thought the worst,” said Mourinho.
“The first assessment by the doctor was that it was not the ligaments for sure. So we believe it is not an important injury.
“Hopefully it isn’t, because the kid is a fantastic player and is showing to you match after match and showing to me in training that he is going to be a key man on the pitch.”
