Liverpool star insists Chelsea are title contenders

Liverpool defender Andrew Robertson has insisted that it is not a two-horse race for the title and that Chelsea are very much in the running.

Despite Chelsea’s unbeaten start to the campaign, many pundits – and Blues boss Maurizio Sarri – have suggested that Liverpool and defending champions Manchester City are the two main contenders.

But Robertson believes Arsenal, who have won nine games in a row, are in the title race along with Chelsea.

“We feel we can compete with any team but people seem to be just dismissing other teams and making it a two-horse race, which is not the case,” said Robertson.

“We played Chelsea last week, who were excellent. They have been on a great run.

“You see teams like Arsenal with a new manager putting great results together so there is a long way to go and there will be a lot of teams competing but we hope we are one of them.”

However, former England captain Alan Shearer believes City and Liverpool are the Premier League’s two outstanding sides – partly because of Chelsea’s apparent reliance on Eden Hazard.

“I still cannot see beyond a two-horse title race between Manchester City and Liverpool,” Shearer said in his column for the BBC Sport website.

He added: “My worry with Chelsea is where their other goals will come from if Hazard stops scoring as regularly, because their main strikers Olivier Giroud and Alvaro Morata are not exactly prolific.

“I also have my concerns about Sarri’s side defensively, namely with David Luiz playing in a four-man defence.”
