Willian’s second-half strike earned Chelsea a vital win in their second Champions League match of the season. Here’s how we rated each Blues player in the 2-1 away victory over Lille.
The Spaniard made a couple of timely first-half interventions as Lille broke from deep, racing from his goal to clear and then making an excellent low save. He could do nothing about Victor Osimhen’s powerful headed equaliser, but was lucky to get away with a late mistake when trying to clear his lines.
A more than steady performance from the captain, who slotted in well in the back three and organised well.
There were a couple of sloppy moments in possession, but he defended well and coped admirably with the pace and power of the Lille attack
Like Zouma, Tomori impressed for the most part using his speed to great effect – late underhit back-pass the notable exception to a good night’s work. He also brought the ball out of defence when possible and also also picked out Tammy Abraham for the opening goal with a fine pass.
James got the nod as a right wing-back and his energy and confidence was evident on his Champions League debut.
He was desperately unlucky not to score with a glorious first-time curling effort in first-half stoppage-time and worked hard throughout, bringing his usual composure and ability to retain possession.
Kante was understandably not at his inspirational best after injury but he still covered a huge amount of ground and made several typical – and vital – defensive challenges.
A mixed bag from Alsono, who got forward regularly but never quite made the most of the attacking space.
He did his defensive work well and had few chances to shine in attack but was not at his sharpest when he had a rare sight of goal.
The Brazilian was outstanding for the opening quarter and scored a fabulous winner, with his usual inconsistencies in between.
The birthday boy had a quiet start but showed a calm head to control, turn and slot Chelsea ahead and showed great maturity in leading the line on his Champions League debut.
The teenage winger made a telling contribution with a fine cross for Willian’s winner and looked dangerous after coming on.
