League position could scupper Chelsea’s transfer chances – Hiddink

Chelsea interim boss Guus Hiddink

Chelsea boss Guus Hiddink has admitted that their league position could affect the club’s ability to sign players this month.

The Blues are 14th after Wednesday’s 1-1 draw with West Brom, 12 points adrift of the top four and only six points clear of the bottom three.

And the Dutchman believes the likely lack of Champions League football next season – and the still-possible threat of relegation – could put off potential targets.

He said: “It’s a very realistic view. Chelsea has to deal with that and also there might be the influence of [having] a new manager.

“That’s a question mark for Chelsea, [whether players say] yes or no to come in, that’s true. That’s the reality for Chelsea nowadays.”

Hiddink admitted he was frustrated by his side’s inability to hold on to the lead against West Brom but said he saw improvements during his five league matches in charge.

He added: “We were one point off the relegation line [when he arrived] and now we have a little bit more [room] to breathe.

“There is a 12-point difference to fourth place which is Tottenham. So we have to work hard and gather our points to step up.

“That’s why it was a pity we [only] got the draw with West Brom, which would have helped us a lot.”
