Lampard scores again as Chelsea win
Chelsea 4 Wigan 1
Late goals from Frank Lampard and Marko Marin capped a deserved win for Chelsea, taking them back into third place.
Leapfrogged by rivals Tottenham earlier in the day, the European champions responded strongly, taking control with goals from Ramires and Eden Hazard.
Shaun Maloney pulled one back for Wigan but Rafael Benitez’s men, who recently surrendered two-goal leads against Southampton and Reading, made sure of the victory in the closing minutes.
Lampard netted his 198th Chelsea goal and summer signing Marin his first, meaning the final scoreline slightly flattered the Blues.
Ramires opened the scoring on 23 minutes, finishing coolly after being through by Fernando Torres.
Wigan had made a decent start, with Petr Cech producing early saves to deny Maloney and former Chelsea forward Franco di Santo.
But the opening goal was a turning point and the home side would have doubled their lead before the break had Ali Al Habsi not tipped over Torres’ header from Cesar Azpilicueta’s right-wing cross.
More good work from Azpilicueta led to Chelsea scoring again 10 minutes into the second half.
The Spaniard found space on the flank and picked out Hazard, who fired home.
However, Wigan replied a couple of minutes later, with Maloney rounding Cech to score after latching onto James McArthur’s ball over the top.
Chelsea’s all-important third goal was a beauty, Hazard pulling the ball back from the left and Juan Mata dummying before Lampard drilled in from 20 yards.
Marin, on as a substitute, nodded in the fourth in injury time after Al Habsi had pushed out Azpilicueta’s drive.
Chelsea: Cech, Azpilicueta, Ivanovic, Cahill (Benayoun 87), Cole, Luiz, Ramires, Oscar (Mata 77), Lampard, Hazard (Marin 90), Torres.
Subs not used: Turnbull, Ferreira, Marin, Bertrand.
