Frank Lampard believes Tammy Abraham’s Champions League goal could be the first of many in Chelsea colours – but insists he would drop him immediately if the striker’s performance levels drop.
Abraham, one of five academy graduates who played in the 2-1 win at Lille, opened the scoring with a delightful turn and finish from Fikayo Tomori’s pass
Lampard said Abraham’s display was “more of the same” following an impressive start to the season which has now seen him score eight goals in eight starts and a total of 10 appearances.
“Tammy’s hungry for goals,” Lampard said. “He’s physical, he gives everything for the team and he has quality when the ball is at his feet.
“We will see many more Champions League goals from him I hope, and many more performances like tonight.
“Of course there’s improvement to be had but he’s showing that.
“The minute Tammy’s levels drop, then we look next to [Olivier] Giroud and [Michy] Batshuayi, and can they come in and make a difference?”
Abraham, whose goal came on his 22nd birthday was one of four academy graduates that started in France.
Tomori looked assured aside from one late back-pass and teed up Abraham’s goal, Mason Mount continued in midfield, Reece James impressed at right wing-back, while Callum Hudson-Odoi crossed for Willian’s volleyed winner.
“The academy are getting the recognition they deserve for the work they’ve done.
“The fans are loving it, the club are loving it and the players are responding.
“Reece James was thrown into his first Champions League game and looked so comfortable.
“It was a really good performance and we deserved the win.”
