Chilwell expected to be fit for Newcastle game
Frank Lampard is “positive” about Ben Chilwell’s chances of being fit for Chelsea’s trip to Newcastle.
Chilwell went off with a back injury during England’s recent game against Belgium and it was initially feared he could be set for a spell on the sidelines.
But his condition has since improved and Blues boss Lampard believes Chilwell will be available for Saturday’s game.
The left-back was due to be assessed on Thursday afternoon.
However, Christian Pulisic is still struggling with a hamstring problem and will miss out again.
Lampard explained: “With Ben Chilwell, I haven’t seen him yet but he was obviously getting fantastic care with England and he was improving.
“I’m positive that he’ll be OK, but I’ll have to see him.
“Christian Pulisic is not fit for Newcastle but he’s stepped up his training slowly.
“It’s been quite a problematic injury, so we’ll stay cautious.”
Chelsea are also likely to be without Thiago Silva for the visit to Tyneside as the veteran defender has been on international duty with Brazil.
And Kai Havertz, who recently tested positive for Covid-19, is back in training but needs to build up his fitness following a fortnight self-isolating.
Lampard said: “Thiago Silva has just landed. He just messaged me this afternoon. He probably won’t be going to Newcastle.
“Kai Havertz is back from isolation. That’s over. He tested negative two days ago, so he’s just started training to get some of his fitness back after two weeks at home.”
