Chelsea slipped to defeat at the London Stadium where Marko Arnautovic’s early strike was enough to give West Ham victory.
Alvaro Morata missed a glorious late chance to earn a point, dragging a half-volley wide after a fine run and pass from N’Golo Kante.
And Eden Hazard also should have done better after more good work by Kante, but shot over from the edge of the box.
Arnautovic’s first Hammers goal, which was curled into the far corner after a one-two with Manuel Lanzini, rewarded a bright start by the hosts but Chelsea slowly began to get on top before half-time.
Chelsea had claims for a penalty rejected when Morata went down following a challenge from Winston Reid and started to dominate possession and create chances.
Hazard dragged a volley across goal from a tight angle and Kante and Davide Zappacosta both had strikes saved by Adrian.
But despite bringing on Pedro, Victor Moses and Willian after the interval, the Hammers stood firm at the back.
Zappacosta shot wide but the best chances came at the end when Morata and Hazard wasted good openings to prevent David Moyes earning his first win as West Ham boss.
