Jose denies reports Mata could join Spurs
Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho insists reports linking fans favourite Juan Mata with a move to Tottenham or any other club are “nonsense”.
The Spanish midfielder – Chelsea’s player of the year for the past two seasons – has been strongly linked with a transfer away from Stamford Bridge and was left on the bench for the 0-0 draw against Manchester United.
And Spurs were reported to be interested in Mata after losing out to Chelsea in the battle to sign Brazil star Willian.
But Mourinho said: “He is very important for me and for Chelsea. The stories that are coming are nonsense stories; he goes nowhere.
“He had a very small pre-season after the Confederations Cup and during that small pre-season, he was injured and only trained two days before we played the first Premier League match.”
Mourinho said tactics also played a big part in his decision to leave out Mata, and added: “He played against Aston Villa so we decided to put him on the bench.”
