Cole out as Chelsea wait on Mata and Luiz
Ashley Cole will miss Chelsea’s Champions League clash with Shakhtar Donetsk because of a hamstring problem.
Cole overcame an ankle knock to play in Saturday’s game against Swansea but picked up a new injury at the Liberty Stadium.
“Ashley won’t be available for tomorrow. He’s got a problem with his hamstring,” Blues boss Roberto Di Matteo confirmed.
“The game tomorrow is too soon for him, but we’re certainly not expecting him to be out for long. We’ll have to see how he progresses.”
And Chelsea could also be without Juan Mata and David Luiz for the visit of the Ukrainian champions.
Both players missed the Swansea game and will be assessed following a training session at Stamford Bridge this evening to see whether they are fit enough to return to action.
Mata has been struggling with a hamstring strain, while defender Luiz is nursing an ankle injury.
“We need to wait for the last training session to see if they’ll be available for tomorrow. We’ll see how they come through,” said Di Matteo.
