Hiddink praises Costa after Chelsea draw

Guus Hiddink praised Diego Costa after the striker scored twice in Chelsea’s 2-2 draw at home to Watford.

Costa was booed by fans during the recent home match against Sunderland, with many believing his poor displays this season was a major factor in Jose Mourinho recently losing his job as Chelsea manager.

He responded with an improved display, putting his side ahead and later equalising after Watford had taken the lead, although a late booking means he is suspended for Monday’s game at Manchester United.

“When he was booed when he was substituted (against Sunderland) his reaction was very good,” said Hiddink.

“It was a very professional reaction as it made him think ‘How should I go on?’

Costa’s first-half opener was his first goal for more than a month

“He focused himself on what he is good at and not wasting energy where he shouldn’t waste it.

“Everyone knows what he is capable of. He must focus on that and not go into the trap.”

Hiddink added: “Last week the fans fully had the right to express themselves about things that happened.

“They (the players) must take the initiative to get the crowd back, which they did.

“They needed to show the crowd what they are willing to do and when they show ambition the crowd reacts positively.”

Costa levelled with a fine finish as Chelsea were in danger of suffering a fourth defeat in seven home league matches.

But Oscar’s 80th-minute penalty miss cost them win in Hiddink’s first match in charge since the Dutchman’s return as Blues boss.

Hiddink said: “Of course when we are near the end of the game and get a penalty for 3-2, it is a pity not to get the three points.

“But you have to analyse the whole game and Watford deserve great respect for the way they played tactically and they have great strikers.

“Of course it is a little bit disappointing not to win but I think it was important the team reacted after going 2-1 down – and their reaction was good.”
