Chelsea struggled to create chances as they looked to avoid defeat at the London Stadium
Marko Arnautovic’s goal had given West Ham an early lead but Chelsea slowly began to get on top before half-time.
But despite bringing on Pedro, Victor Moses and Willian after the interval, the Hammers stood firm at the back with a Davide Zappacosta shot that went just wide as close as the visitors came.
Before the break Arnatovic curled the ball into the far corner for his first West Ham goal after a slick passing move involving Manuel Lanzini and Michail Antonio on the edge of the Chelsea box.
Chelsea had claims for a penalty rejected when Alvaro Morata went down following a challenge from Winston Reid and started to dominate possession and create chances.
The lively Eden Hazard dragged a volley across goal from a tight angle and N’Golo Kante and Zappacosta both had strikes saved by Adrian.
