Former Chelsea star Gus Poyet has told Talksport he believes the club should keep Maurizio Sarri.
There has been much speculation over the future of the Blues head coach, with reports in his native Italy linking him with Roma.
Reports have suggested that Chelsea will sack Sarri after what has often been a troubled season.
But Poyet believes Sarri, who took over from Antonio Conte last year, deserves more time and should be kept on.
“As a coach, I hope so,” said Poyet, who had a four-year spell at Stamford Bridge.
“Last year the manager of Chelsea was Conte and they were playing a totally different kind of football.
“Everybody was fed up with that because it was too defensive and blah blah blah.
“The year before, they were champions with Conte. It goes quickly, after six months you’re good or bad – bad, see you later.
“To change that way of playing and to bring them to another level, it takes time. Maybe a year, maybe a year and a half.
“I know you can’t always ask for that at Chelsea. But I would like him to stay.”
Poyet also suggested that Sarri should be given money to spend in order to make his approach work.
The former Uruguay international explained: “If you give him all the tools for him to play that way then you’re going to have certain players.
“Then, if you decide to change manager, you need to bring someone similar and not someone who wants to change the style again.”
