Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho described Nemanja Matic as “phenomenal” after the midfielder’s impressive display in the 0-0 Champions League draw away to Dynamo Kiev.
The Blues had the better of the chances, hitting the post through Eden Hazard and Willian and also having strong claims for a penalty turned down when Cesc Fabregas appeared to fouled.
Mourinho was quick to praise both his side and Matic, who he recalled to the side after a tough start to the season.
“Matic was tremendous,” Mourinho said. “He was phenomenal. His work with Ramires in the centre of the pitch was really impressive.
“I see progress clearly. I see players who are playing more to their level. I see progress individually and collectively. The concentration was phenomenal.”
But Mourinho was less impressed with the referee’s failure to award a spot-kick when Fabregas appeared to bundled over.
“The referee was weak and naive,” the Chelsea manager added.
“It was a big penalty. I don’t understand what the [behind the] goal referee does because he doesn’t make a clear decision.
“When it is 0-0 and such a penalty is not given it is a critical moment of the game.
“We hit the post twice and had a great occasion with Matic and a very good solid defensive performance against a dangerous team.
“Once more it was a game without luck. But it is okay, we have the destiny in our own hands. Qualification depends clearly on us.”
